So three authors (not mentioned here) I've discovered since I first started this thread -
M.L. Brennan - Generation V series
Elliott James - Pax Arcana series
Nicholas Kaufmann - Trent trilogy (only 2 books out so far)
These are all UF the way I tend to like it - a mystery/cause + high fight count + fairly low romance.
I wanted to thank everyone again for the recommendations! Especially for Anne Bishop, Larry Correia and Seanan McGuire - these 3 have become part of my must read author lists.

I thought I might also suggest the 'Moon Blood Saga' by Z.W. Taylor and, although not strictly UF per say, Imogen Keeper's 'After the plague' series
